The Midnight Robber is an unforgettable figure, instantly recognizable by his flamboyant attire, oversized hat, and commanding presence. His “robber talk,” a captivating blend of exaggerated tales and grandiose claims, draws listeners into his world. His costume is elaborate and symbolic, featuring baggy trousers, an embroidered shirt, and a long, flowing cape often adorned with symbols of death and destruction. Completing the look are accessories like a whistle, a gun or dagger, and a sack or coffin to collect his "loot."

Equally distinctive are the Robber's movements. He adopts a wide stance, moving with a unique, almost menacing gait centred on his knees rather than the typical alternating strides. His signature whistle, with its long blast followed by shorter ones, heralds his approach, ensuring all are aware of his presence. This whistle is a crucial part of his performance, signalling to everyone that the Robber is near. When he has gathered a sufficient audience, he uses grand gestures to establish his playing area before addressing the crowd. He recounts the heroic deeds of his ancestors and declares his intentions, but woe to anyone who dares to leave before he’s finished. Such an insult is met with a commanding shout: “STOP! STOP! You mocking pretender!” To avoid further confrontation, it is wise to place a generous offering in his small coffin-shaped box—a tacit request for permission to leave.

Scholars like Dan Crowley and Errol Hill have identified the Midnight Robber as a parody of American Western movie heroes, drawing inspiration from infamous figures like Jesse James. However, the Robber’s roots trace back much further, to the griots of West Africa, who were master storytellers and oral historians.

The Midnight Robber’s speeches are dramatic monologues delivered to potential "victims," demanding a ransom for their release. These speeches draw from various sources, including the Bible and other literary texts, and are performed with rhythmic cadence, theatrical gestures, and the ever-present whistle. While his speech may appear to be in Standard English, a closer examination reveals a coded language that entertains the audience while elevating the masquerader's status. The Robber’s eloquence, rhythm, and costume are inseparable elements of his performance, each enhancing the other. What might seem like mere threats on the surface actually reveals a deeper communicative structure within Trinidad Carnival. The carnival is more than a reflection of society; it is a grand stage where the Robber embodies a fusion of old and new world cultures, blending Caribbean history with Western influences in a bold display of bravado and cultural expression.
